Tattoo Removal

We use the Medlite C6, a short pulsed Q-switch laser. This laser works by producing short pulses of intense light that pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin to be selectively absorbed by tattoo pigment. This laser energy causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the bodies’ immune system.

Most clients require several treatments, on average professional tattoos need 6-15 treatments, while amateur tattoos need 4-5 treatments, approximately 8-12 weeks apart. The body will take up to 4 weeks to break up the ink of the tattoo. Cosmetic or white ink may darken before lightening.

Older tattoos require fewer treatments, as the body slowly gets rid of the ink and also due to exposure to ultraviolet light. Yellows, greens and fluorescent inks are more challenging than darker blacks and blues. Other factors include; skin type, location and colour of tattoo, amount of ink, scarring or tissue change, and layering. Your therapist will take these factors into consideration before treating your tattoo.

Pre-treatment care:

  • Do NOT expose the treatment are to the sun or solarium 2 weeks prior to treatment. Use sun block with SPF 50+ at all times.
  • Do NOT use spray tan or tanning creams at least two weeks prior to treatment all traces of tan have to be removed. The procedure may have to be postponed if you have a tan.
  • Any form of tanning may lead to complications and side effects such as hyper and hypo pigmentation.
  • Area to be treated should be shaved, if in an area where you would normally shave hair.
  • Must wait 3 months to treat new tattoos.
  • Do NOT use prescription Vitamin A for two weeks prior to treatment.
  • Do NOT use Roaccutane for at least 6 months prior to treatment.
  • The use of a topical anaesthetic Dr Numb can be applied 1-2 hours prior to treatment.

Redness and swelling are common side effects and may last a few hours to a couple of days after treatment. There is immediate whitening (frosting) of the area, which usually last several minutes. You may also experience pinpoint bleeding, bruising and blistering, blisters may take 1-2 days to heal and a bandage may be applied. In 3-4 days your tattoo will begin to peel. Do NOT pick or scratch the area as this may lead to infection and scarring. Healing is usually complete within 4-6 weeks. Your therapist will provide you with detailed post care information after initial treatment.
